If you are living in areas where you hardly have electricity, just don’t bother to continue reading this article because it’s not meant for you. Lol!

But seriously, if you hardly have electricity how would you power an inverter? Except of course you are planning to use a generator, then you can continue reading about inverter in Nigeria.

As you know, power inverters are electronic gadgets that convert energy stored in a battery to AC current that can power your appliances. The main catch of power inverters is their low noise and emission-free operations including their ease of use. In this post, I will guide you on how to buy the best inverters in Nigeria to backup power in your home or in your office.

Inverters and Batteries

The first important question that should come to mind is if you really do need an inverter because the first challenge with a power inverter is that the batteries need to be charged.

Like I said from my opening paragraph, you need electricity to charge the battery of any power inverter and if in your location power supply is not steady you may lack enough power supply to charge your battery, which could result in poor performance or inability to use the inverter at all which will then be a waste of money.

Ideally, persons who should buy a power inverter must have at least 12 hours of power supply daily, whether via a power generator or PHCN.

Please note that a power inverter is more suited for resistive loads like your household and office electronics like TVs, Computers, Printers, lights, etc. but are not okay with inductive loads. So if you plan on operating lots of machines with motors in them, use a generator, except of course you can afford an industrial grade inverter.

Your Power Needs

Now it’s time to calculate your power needs. You will find the power rating of each gadget on the back or side; they are always measured in watts (w). You can also go through the manual to be sure. Let me give you an illustration of how to calculate your power needs. Take for instance if you have:

  • 1 TV set with (100w)
  • 1 Decoder with (20w)
  • 1 DVD Player with (20w)
  • 1 Electric Fan with (70w)
  • 1 Laptop with (20w)
  • 3 energy efficient light points with (90w)
  • Your total load will be = 320w

Next step: get a VA equivalent of the power, which if we assume a power factor of 0.8 gives 400 VA (i.e. 320/0.8)

Next step: derate the power inverter to create some allowance for flexibility and to ensure it does not overwork itself.

To derate the power inverter, simply multiply your total load by two. If we should follow the example above, 2 multiplied by 400 = 800VA. Therefore, you will need to buy an inverter with a power rating of 800VA or higher.

Note that the purpose of derating is to ensure that your inverter does not operate at full-load or near full-load, which will guarantee the prolonged existence of the device.

Type of Inverter Batteries

The SMF (Sealed, Maintenance Free) deep cycle inverter battery is the best battery in the market right now. Using car batteries give off poisonous fumes which could affect your health. SMF batteries can be installed indoors making them very convenient.

A different type of battery you can use is the tubular battery. They are also deep cycle batteries but have need of some maintenance. I won’t advise the installation of Tubular batteries indoor because they are not completely sealed and could emit gases.

Number of Batteries Required

An inverter is usually rated in this pattern X VA/Y V, where X is the rated power output and Y is the input voltage required.

For instance, an 800 VA/12 V inverter will give an output power of up to 800 VA and need an input voltage of 12V. In the same way, a 1.5 KVA/24V inverter will output 1.5 KVA (1500 VA) and require 24V input.

In view of the fact that batteries habitually come in 12 volts voltage, the 800 VA/12 V will need a minimum of one 12V battery, while the 1.5KVA/24V inverter will need a minimum of two 12V batteries connected in series.

What Battery Capacity

Now that you know the prices of inverter batteries in Nigeria, let’s look at batteries and their capacity.

Batteries have different capacities. The higher the capacity, the longer a battery will last, given similar loading.

I suggest a 200 Ah (Ampere-Hour) battery through a 100 Ah or 150 Ah battery can be managed.

For instance, using our example load above (400VA), a fully charged 200 Ah battery can give 6 hours of power while a fully charged 100 Ah battery will give only three hours.

Note: these are theoretical values, actual values may be less (as we overlooked inverter efficiency and our power factor is assumed).

If you wish to increase the capacity and use time, you can connect more batteries or reduce the load on the inverter.

Solar Energy Support

Some inverters come with solar energy support which enables you to connect solar panel(s) to your inverter and tap from the Sun. This type of inverter is known as a Solar Inverter.

Except you have above average electrical skills, you will need a technician to install your inverter. Fortunately, some retailers and online stores that sell inverters offer options with the installation kit, making installation easier for you. The cost of the installation kit may be incorporated in the cost of the inverter.

Be sure to check that the cable connecting the inverter to the battery is as short as possible. This will reduce energy losses.
